‘We’re very grateful to News Shopper’ - Disabled man’s fine CANCELLED after paper gets involved

A grieving, disabled man who was given a parking fine just hours after his wife died, has had the ticket cancelled after News Shopper got involved.

William Green, 78, rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 26 after being told his wife, Betty, had just hours to live.

All the disabled bays were taken, so Bill parked in an adjacent spot with his blue badge visible.
News Shopper got in contact with Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust who were shocked to hear what had happened.

The trust has now arranged for the fine to be cancelled with Euro Car Parks who are in charge of the parking at QE Hospital.

A spokeswoman for L&G NHS Trust said: "As soon as we heard about this case we arranged for the parking ticket to be cancelled. We are very sorry that Mr Green received a fine during this difficult time.”

Betty was due to be moved to Greenwich and Bexley Hospice when a bed was available, however the consultant told the family she wasn't likely to make the journey.

Betty sadly passed away on the morning of July 27 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Much to Bill's horror, when he returned to his car, he had been issued with a fine.

The grieving dad challenged the ticket with Euro Car Parks, which administrates the hospital parking.
The company refused to cancel the fine despite sending Bill a photo of his vehicle with the blue badge on display.

He has a blue badge because he is also battling cancer and suffered a heart attack whilst finishing chemotherapy.

Euro Car Parks sent Bill a letter stating that the reason for the ticket was because he had no valid permit was purchased for his vehicle.

Jane, Bill and Betty's daughter said: "We feel very grateful to News Shopper for stepping in to help and relieved that the issue has now been resolved.

"It had been causing Dad additional stress at such a heartbreaking time, I do hope that the parking company might treat customers with similar compassion going forward."

Euro Car Park was contacted for comment.
