Brexit: Stephen Hammond effectively barred from standing at next general election

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond was one of 21 Tories who were stripped of the Conservative whip and effectively barred from standing at the next general election in retaliation for rebelling over Brexit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the move after they backed a plan to take control of the Commons timetable to pass legislation to block a no-deal Brexit.

Whips are MPs or Members of the House of Lords appointed by each party in Parliament to help organise their party's contribution to parliamentary business.

One of their responsibilities is making sure the maximum number of their party members vote, and vote the way their party wants.

While some of the 21 spoke to the press after the night, Mr Hammond, along with fellow Tory rebels Nicholas Soames, Antoinette Sandbach, Margot James and Anne Milton left Downing Street without making any comment.

Mr Hammond has been approached for comment.
