An MP has claimed the Prime Minister has “no credible plan” to avoid "crashing out of the European Union" next month.
He recently withdrew the Conservative whip from 21 MPs who voted to block a no-deal Brexit.
But the House of Lords recently agreed to progress a bill in Parliament seeking to block a no-deal.
Joan Ryan, Independent Group for Change MP, was a leading signatory to the Bill. She said the consequences of a no-deal Brexit would be “huge” and would affect people in Brimsdown, Enfield.
She continued: “At Brimsdown we have the second largest industrial estate in London. If we leave with no deal and 240 companies on site - employing more 8,000 people - get hit by tariffs on their exports, then Brimsdown and Enfield will suffer.
“Our Borough also has nearly 40,000 children living on or below the poverty line – and a no-deal Brexit would significantly worsen the problems my constituents are facing.”
The MP added she was “proud” to have worked with colleagues to block a no-deal and felt that the only way out of “this mess” was to have a people’s vote on Brexit.
Ms Ryan continued: “I acknowledge that many people, including those who voted to Remain, are sick to the back teeth with Brexit and want the issue sorted and to go away. But neither a no-deal Brexit, nor a General Election, is going to stop this nightmare.
“MPs – the representative voice of the people in Parliament – were right to take the catastrophe of a no-deal off the table now.
“I’m proud to have worked with colleagues from across the House of Commons to block a no-deal Brexit.
“Resolving this issue was of the utmost urgency, given the Prime Minister has no credible plan to avert crashing out of the EU on 31 October.”
